The main building of the Bank of Korea provides extensive information on the manufacturing process of money and the development of the Korean economy. The collections is vast and there are over 20,000 pieces of Korean and foreign banknotes, coins and tokens on display. The museum consists of four exhibition halls and an information reference library. Admission to the Bank of Korea Money Museum is free.
1. Historic Building & Architecture
Housed in a 1912 landmark: Originally designed by famed Japanese architect Tatsuno Kingo (also Tokyo Station), this majestic granite-and-steel building was once the Bank of Chōsen and later South Korea’s central bank headquarters .
Architectural features: French chateau-inspired elements, symmetrical design, Tuscan columns, domed corner towers, and ornate pediments make it a standout in central Seoul.
2. Museum Highlights
Numismatic treasure trove: Over 3,500–4,500 pieces of domestic and global currency—from ancient Korean and Chinese coins to modern banknotes.
Engaging exhibits:
First floor: History of the Bank of Korea, material origins, minting processes, and security features of Korean banknotes.
Basement/M floor: Original Governor’s office and historic policy meeting rooms, showcasing the building’s institutional history .
Second floor: Interactive vault replica, world currencies from ~170 countries, and hands‑on play zones for kids
